Hardware Coffee
A beloved hardware store in West Portal closed a while back. Low sales, after years as a neighborhood fixture. The kind of loss a community remembers.
Something opened in its place, and it is called Hardware Coffee.
The owner, Sam Pederson, kept the name as a nod to the store that stood here before. He could have started fresh but he chose not to.
Walk in and there is great coffee, the kind that makes you slow down. Pastries. A small, well chosen wine list. And in the back, a floral station where you can buy an arrangement or make your own.
On a weekday it is breakfast and a meeting. On a Saturday, my husband and I have a glass of wine while the kids get a treat. In the evening it is friends, flowers, and a table to gather around. Sip and arrange nights. Parenting meetups, in a neighborhood thick with schools.
For the first few weeks, the second floor stayed closed. One floor, on purpose. As if he wanted to see how people actually used the place before opening the rest.
The room built its own buzz. People want to wait in line, just to be part of the experience. A full room does something an empty one cannot. It creates a purpose that you can feel in the neighborhood, on the block and on the feed, faster than any ad. The energy of a full room is marketing.
What is a new spot near you that is getting the small decisions right?
