An Urban Destination

Last Friday, I met Anjee Solanki for a catch up and our quarterly innovation session at The Ferry Building, and was reminded of what an excellent example of urban placemaking this project is.

Wilson Meany renovated the property in the early 2000s, transforming an underutilized transit terminal into a thriving transit hub, a public marketplace anchored by food and office space. Their work took the Ferry Building from a place to a destination, truly bringing out the beauty of this incredible building.

For 13 years, I lived a few blocks away and visited two or three times a day to grab coffee or a meal. My son ate his first apple at the Ferry Building Farmers Market. While it was known for being a visitor destination, I experienced firsthand how it became a destination for the surrounding community.

Fast forward to today, now owned by Hudson Pacific, The Ferry Building continues to impress with an eclectic tenant mix that combines favorites like Acme Bread, Far West Fungi, Book Passages and Recchuiti Confections with  newer brands like Bernal Cutlery, Cholita Linda, Lunette Cambodia, and our lunch spot – Arquet.

An experience well worth a visit if you haven’t been to the Ferry Building in a while.
